Gran Canaria Bike Week – La Cicloturista

Gran Canaria Bike Week is the longest-running cycling week in Spain: the island has held it since 1988 and in 2026 it reaches its thirty-third edition. It is not a one-day ride but a stage cyclosportive built around spending a whole week riding across Gran Canaria with the best climate in Europe in the middle of December, and with free registration.

Eight stages from December 4 to 11

The 2026 edition strings together eight stages with the usual base in Maspalomas, in the south of the island. The route alternates coastal and midland days with summit stages that climb above 2,000 metres, including a queen stage of 124 km and 2,700 m of climbing around Pico de las Nieves. Each day you can choose between three categories, Advanced, Intermediate and Starter, so it works both for the rider who wants to push and for those looking to ride steadily and rack up kilometres.

Winter cycling on the island

With mild temperatures, mountain roads open all year and an organisation with decades of experience, the Bike Week has become a fixture for clubs and riders from northern Europe escaping the winter. Many combine it with Gran Fondo Pico de las Nieves, held on November 29, which works as the first stage of the week.

Gran Canaria beyond the ride

Between stages, the island offers the Maspalomas dunes, the old town of Teror, the Roque Nublo, the Agaete valley and a network of climbs that has made Gran Canaria a benchmark training destination for professional teams. Discover more rides in the region at Canary Islands.

Everything you need to prepare for this event, in one place.

Gran Canaria Bike Week 2026 registration

Registration is done on the official website and is free: you can sign up for the whole week or for individual stages, and choose each day between the Advanced, Intermediate and Starter categories.

Tips

  • Even though it is free, register early: places per stage are limited
  • You can switch category day by day depending on how you feel

Where to stay for Gran Canaria Bike Week

Maspalomas and Playa del Inglés, in the south, are the natural base for the week: most stages start there and the area has the island's largest choice of cyclist-friendly hotels. It is worth booking accommodation for both weeks together if you combine it with Gran Fondo Pico de las Nieves.

Tips

  • Book in Maspalomas or Playa del Inglés to walk to almost every stage start
  • Look for a hotel with a garage or bike room: it is eight days living with your bike

Bike gear for Gran Canaria Bike Week

Eight days in a row, with stages of up to 124 km and 2,700 m+, mean arriving with the bike fully serviced and spares on hand so you don't lose a day to a silly mechanical.

Tips

  • Carry a spare tube, a second tube and a plug kit: the mileage adds up
  • Check the drivetrain and brakes mid-week, not only before the start

Technical clothing for Gran Canaria Bike Week

In December the south of Gran Canaria sits around 22-24 degrees on the coast, but the summit stages climb above 1,900 m and can be 15 degrees colder and windy.

Tips

  • Pack summer kit for the coastal stages and warm kit for the summit ones
  • Wash and dry daily: with eight stages back to back you need to rotate two pairs of shorts

Nutrition for Gran Canaria Bike Week

What decides a stage week is not a single day but recovering well each night so you can do it again: carbs and protein as soon as you get off the bike, eight days running.

Tips

  • Eat something solid within the first half hour after each stage
  • Add an electrolyte tab to your bottles on the coastal stages for the heat

How to get to Maspalomas

Gran Canaria airport (LPA) is about 20 minutes from Maspalomas via the GC-1, with direct buses and bike-rack taxis available on request.

Tips

  • Fly into Gran Canaria (LPA); it is the best-connected airport in the islands
  • Book a transfer with a bike rack if you travel with a hard case

Car rental in Gran Canaria

It is not essential if you stay in the south, but a car helps you reach the decentralised starts like Arucas and go sightseeing on the short-stage days.

Tips

  • Book ahead: December is high season in Gran Canaria

Sports insurance for Gran Canaria Bike Week

The organisation requires a valid federative licence or one-day insurance for each stage you take part in; it can be arranged during registration.

Tips

  • Federative licence or one-day insurance required per stage

Body care for Gran Canaria Bike Week

Eight days in a row on the bike, with constant Canary sun, make sunscreen and muscle recovery the key to reaching the last stage in one piece.

Tips

  • Apply sunscreen every morning and use chamois cream on the shorts area
  • Foam-roll every night: it is what lets you go again the next day

Components for Gran Canaria Bike Week

The summit stages, with the climb around Pico de las Nieves, call for wide gearing; a power meter helps you pace so you don't blow up mid-week.

Tips

  • Fit a wide-range cassette: some days pack over 2,500 m of climbing
  • Ride to power and use heart rate to track accumulated fatigue

Sunglasses for Gran Canaria Bike Week

The Gran Canaria sun in December is low and especially bothersome early and late in the day, when several stages start and finish.

Tips

  • Bring a photochromic lens for the stages that start with the sun low
