Heading into a gran fondo without knowing whether you’ll take 5 or 8 hours is the fastest way to run out of food halfway through. Distance alone tells you nothing: 120km flat and 120km with 3,000m of climbing are two completely different rides. Pick your event or enter your own numbers and calculate the real time you’ll spend on course.

Why elevation matters more than distance
An intermediate rider cruises at 28 km/h on the flat without pushing too hard. That same rider, on an 8% climb, can drop to 12-14 km/h. That’s why two events with the same distance but different elevation gain have completely different finish times, and why this calculator weighs elevation independently from flat distance.
What to do with your result
If the calculator gives you more than 4-5 hours on course, you’re not looking at a normal ride: you need to plan fuelling like an endurance event, not a Sunday spin. Here’s what most gran fondo riders carry so they don’t bonk halfway up a climb:
View Maurten Gel 160 on Amazon →If it’s hot or your event runs past 5 hours, add electrolytes: losing salts without replacing them is the most common cause of cramping in the second half of a long event.
View Precision Hydration 1000 on Amazon →Always real data
The event times you can pick from the dropdown come from each event’s official distance and elevation gain, the same figures we use on our event pages. If your event isn’t listed, enter the distance and elevation from its official route manually.
Once you know how long you’ll be on course, pace it right: use our power zones calculator to know exactly which zone to hold on the flat sections and which to save for the climbs.
