Gran Fondo Pico de las Nieves – Ciclismo a Fondo
Gran Fondo Pico de las Nieves is the flagship winter cyclosportive on Gran Canaria. In 2026 it launches a partnership with Ciclismo a Fondo magazine, which now gives the event its name, and keeps Arucas as its epicentre: the start is given from the Plaza de la Constitución, in the town’s historic centre. It also opens Gran Canaria Bike Week, the island’s bicycle week held since 1988.
A 125-kilometre route to the roof of the island
The main route combines 125 km with 3,324 m of elevation gain, and its backbone is the climb to Pico de las Nieves, at 1,935 m, one of the longest and toughest ascents you can ride in Spain. The route includes three timed segments that decide the classification. Riders after a more manageable challenge have the Artenara route, 59 km and 1,845 m+, which shares the first timed segment with the Gran Fondo and finishes in the Plaza de Artenara.
Winter cycling with the best climate in Europe
In late November, while the continent moves into winter, Gran Canaria offers mild temperatures on the coast and open, well-surfaced mountain roads. That contrast, along with organisation by DG Eventos and institutional backing from the island government, has made the event a meeting point for hundreds of Spanish and international riders.
Arucas and Gran Canaria beyond the ride
Arucas keeps a monumental historic centre with its neo-Gothic church, the Casa de la Cultura and the tradition of Canarian rum and bananas. From there, the island unfolds the Caldera de Bandama, the Roque Nublo, the Agaete valley and dozens of climbs that make it worth staying to ride all week. Gran Fondo Pico de las Nieves 2026 registration
Registration is managed through Rockthesport, with two options: the full Gran Fondo to Pico de las Nieves and the shorter Artenara. Places are limited and the price rises as the date approaches.
Tips
- Register early: it is the most popular event of the Canary winter and sells out
- Pick the Artenara route if you have not ridden close to 3,000 m of climbing before
Where to stay for Gran Fondo Pico de las Nieves
Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is 15 minutes from Arucas and has the island's largest choice of hotels. The south, in Maspalomas, is the usual base for riders who follow the event with Gran Canaria Bike Week.
Tips
- Stay in Las Palmas or Arucas to sleep near the start
- Book in Maspalomas if you are staying for the December Bike Week
Bike gear for Gran Fondo Pico de las Nieves
Climbing 3,324 m in 125 km, much of it on the continuous ascent to Pico de las Nieves, demands a light bike, very wide gearing and brakes in perfect condition for the long descent afterwards.
Guides to get you ready
Tips
- Fit the lowest gear you can: the climb to the roof is very long
- Check pads and tyres before the descent back to the coast
Technical clothing for Gran Fondo Pico de las Nieves
You start in coastal warmth in Arucas, but at the summit, at nearly 1,950 m, the temperature can drop by more than 15 degrees and the wind bites, so warm clothing for the descent is essential.
Guides to get you ready
Tips
- Carry a jacket and arm warmers in your pocket even if you start in short sleeves
- A windproof gilet makes the difference on the descent from the summit
Nutrition for Gran Fondo Pico de las Nieves
The sustained climb to Pico de las Nieves can last more than two hours without a break, so it is wise to carry your own food and not rely only on the organisation's feed stations.
Guides to get you ready
Tips
- Eat steadily throughout the climb, not only once you reach the top
- Start with two bottles: feed stations are spaced out on the upper section
