Prueba Cicloturista Oscos Granfondo
The Prueba Cicloturista Oscos Granfondo is one of the most demanding events on the Asturias Challenge, the circuit of cyclosportives that rides through little-known corners of the Principality. It starts in Santa Eulalia de Oscos, in the heart of the Los Oscos region, and runs entirely within the Oscos-Eo and Terras de Burón Biosphere Reserve, one of the least populated and best-preserved areas of Asturias. The format combines a timed prologue on Saturday with the gran fondo on Sunday, following the same scheme used across all Asturias Challenge events.
A 111-kilometer route through Los Oscos
The main course covers 111 km with 2,543 meters of accumulated elevation gain, stringing together narrow, little-travelled mountain passes across the municipalities of Santa Eulalia de Oscos, San Martín de Oscos and Villanueva de Oscos. Riders entered in the combined package also face a 3.8 km timed prologue on Saturday afternoon, whose result is added to the general classification. It’s a distinctly mountainous route with barely any flat resting sections, aimed at cyclists experienced with big elevation gains.
Unspoiled territory and careful organization
What sets this event apart in the Asturian calendar is precisely its location: Los Oscos is one of the most isolated and least-travelled regions in Asturias, with narrow roads that see almost no traffic outside the event. That translates into a route that’s practically free of cars, but also into demanding terrain, with steep ramps and tight bends that reward technical control on the descents as much as power on the climbs.
Los Oscos beyond the ride
Los Oscos comprises three municipalities — Santa Eulalia de Oscos, San Martín de Oscos and Villanueva de Oscos — that preserve an almost untouched rural landscape, with oak and chestnut forests, mountain pastures and traditional architecture linked to the old ironworking industry. Using the event weekend to visit the Ethnographic Museum in Grandas de Salime or explore nearby Taramundi is a natural way to extend your stay. Discover more events in the region in Asturias.
