Sureste Bike Race
The Sureste Bike Race is Gran Canaria’s best-attended MTB event, organised by the D-Route Bike Club with support from the Santa Lucía de Tirajana town council and the Island Cycling Federation. Since its first edition in 2023 it has grown in both participant numbers and route difficulty, becoming a fixture on the Canary Islands mountain-bike calendar. For 2027 it takes a calendar leap: it will be the opening round of the Spanish Marathon Cup (XCM), drawing licensed racers from across Spain alongside the local crowd.
A 67-kilometre route across the island’s south-east
The marathon distance covers 67 km and 1,200 m of elevation gain, starting and finishing at La Karpa de Vecindario and passing through the municipalities of Ingenio and San Bartolomé de Tirajana. The course combines volcanic dirt tracks, ravines and technical sections that test both fitness and bike-handling skills. For a more accessible challenge, the Short Distance offers 42 km and 750 m D+ over a similar but much more compact route.
Opening round of the 2027 Spanish Marathon Cup
The RFEC choosing Santa Lucía de Tirajana to open the 2027 XCM Cup is a significant boost for Canary Islands mountain biking, which has historically been somewhat removed from the national calendar due to distance from the mainland. The race was already the Canary Islands MTB Marathon Championship, so the jump to national category rewards years of organisational work by the D-Route Bike Club.
Gran Canaria beyond the race
South-eastern Gran Canaria, with Maspalomas and Playa del Inglés a quarter of an hour away by car, offers the island’s most complete tourist infrastructure: hotels of every category, varied dining, and mild weather year-round that makes up for any logistical hiccup. If you're travelling without your own bike, several shops in southern Gran Canaria rent suspension MTBs suited to the race's technical terrain.
Tips
- Book ahead in high tourist season: MTB rental stock runs out fast in winter
Technical clothing for the Sureste Bike Race
In mid-February, temperatures in south-eastern Gran Canaria are mild, but the trade wind can cool things down on the route's higher sections.

Tips
- Bring a light windbreaker for exposed sections, even though overall temperatures are pleasant
Nutrition for the Sureste Bike Race

Sports insurance for the Sureste Bike Race
Registration includes one-day insurance for non-licensed participants; licensed riders must present a valid RFEC or regional federation licence.
Tips
- Check that your insurance covers MTB racing on trails and rough terrain, not just road cycling
Body care for the Sureste Bike Race
The technical terrain and bumps of the volcanic course punish wrists and lower back; spend some time on recovery after crossing the finish line.
