Gran Fondo Ézaro

Gran Fondo Ézaro is the main cyclosportive event on the Costa da Morte, one of the wildest stretches of coastline on the peninsula. It runs along cliffs, rías and fishing villages in western Galicia and finishes somewhere unforgettable: the Mirador de Ézaro ramp, above the falls of the river Xallas, the only one in Europe that drops straight into the sea.

A punchy route beside the Atlantic

The Gran Fondo, about 150 kilometres and 2,600 metres of climbing, has no big passes but links short, sharp climbs with no respite, with the Atlantic wind for company. The Medio Fondo, about 80 kilometres, shares the coastal section and the final climb.

The Mirador de Ézaro wall

The climb to the viewpoint is short but brutal, with ramps above 20 per cent. Cresting it after 150 kilometres, with views of the Corcubión ría and Cape Fisterra in the background, is the reward that defines this ride.

The Costa da Morte beyond the bike

Fisterra, the lighthouse, the beaches of Carnota and the cuisine of the ría round off a weekend in one of the most characterful corners of Galicia. Discover more events in Galicia.

Everything you need to prepare for this event, in one place.

Gran Fondo Ézaro registration

Registration is handled on the official website and the entry usually includes feed stations and finish services. Numbers are limited because of the narrow coastal roads.

Tips

  • Check whether the entry includes insurance or you need a licence
  • Download the official track as soon as it is published

Where to stay near Ézaro

Cee, Corcubión and Muros are the most practical bases, with hotels and rural houses a few minutes from the start. In October there is more availability than in summer.

Tips

  • Cee and Corcubión are under 15 minutes from Ézaro
  • Finisterre is a good option to extend the weekend

Bike gear for the Costa da Morte

The course has stretches of uneven surface and descents with sea moisture. Grippy tyres and serviced brakes are essential.

Tips

  • Drop tyre pressure slightly if the asphalt is wet
  • A small mudguard if rain is forecast

Technical clothing for the Galician autumn

The Atlantic wind and the chance of rain make a breathable waterproof jacket the key piece, more than cold-weather kit.

Tips

  • A packable waterproof jacket
  • Full-finger gloves and overshoes in case the coast turns cool

Nutrition for the Gran Fondo

The 150 kilometres are a constant grind on the punchy coastal terrain. You need to eat steadily to reach the Ézaro wall in one piece.

Tips

  • Save a caffeine gel for just before the final wall
  • Do not skip the feed station before Ézaro

Gearing for the Ézaro wall

With ramps above 20 per cent at the end of 150 kilometres, a 34-tooth sprocket or even bigger is almost mandatory to ride up the viewpoint without walking.

Tips

  • Test your lowest gear on a steep climb before the event
  • Take the wall seated at low cadence, no surges

Protection and recovery

Even in autumn, the sun reflecting off the sea burns. And the punchy coastal terrain leaves your legs heavy for several days.

Tips

  • Sweat and water-resistant sunscreen

How to get to Ézaro

Ézaro is just over an hour from Santiago de Compostela by road. Santiago airport is the most convenient for anyone coming from outside Galicia.

Tips

  • Rent a car in Santiago: public transport to the Costa da Morte is limited
  • Arrive on Saturday to scout the final wall

Licence and insurance

You need a valid racing licence or the one-day insurance the organisers offer during registration.

Tips

  • Racing licence or one-day insurance required
