Clásica Sierra de Segura

The Clásica Sierra de Segura is a young cyclosportive, with just three editions behind it, but it has quickly earned a place on the Andalusian calendar thanks to its route through one of Spain’s largest and least crowded natural parks. It starts in Orcera, a small Jaén town in the heart of the Sierra de Segura, and follows low-traffic mountain roads through pine forests and limestone crags.

A 104-kilometer route through the natural park

With 104 km and 2,100 m of elevation gain, the route crosses the Cazorla, Segura y Las Villas Natural Park, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. The climbs are demanding but moderate in length, alternating with technical descents that reward riders who handle a bike well on mountain roads.

Nature without the crowds

Unlike other Gran Fondos with thousands of riders, the Clásica Sierra de Segura keeps a more intimate character, with limited capacity that lets riders enjoy the route without the crowding typical of the biggest events. That said, it requires careful logistical planning: the area has less tourist infrastructure than the rest of Andalusia.

The Sierra de Segura beyond the ride

The area around Orcera, Segura de la Sierra and Hornos offers some of Jaén’s lesser-known charming villages, along with the source of the Guadalquivir river in the nearby peaks. It’s also mountain olive-oil country, with a rustic cuisine still largely undiscovered by mass tourism. Discover more events in the region in Andalusia.

Everything you need to prepare for this event, in one place.

Clásica Sierra de Segura registration

Registration is managed through RockTheSport, with bib pickup the evening before at the Orcera municipal pavilion; same-day registration is also possible if places remain.

Tips

  • €46 for the Gran Fondo entry; bib pickup from 5pm to 9pm the day before

Where to stay for the Clásica Sierra de Segura

Orcera and the nearby villages of the Sierra de Segura have a limited rural accommodation offer; it's worth booking ahead as this is a nature-tourism destination.

Tips

  • Segura de la Sierra and Hornos, very close by, are alternatives with charming rural guesthouses

Bike gear for the Clásica Sierra de Segura

With 2,100 m of elevation gain over 104 km on mountain roads with tight bends, it's worth checking brakes and gearing before the start.

Tips

  • Check your brake pads: the route has long, technical descents

Bike rental in Jaén

If you don't have your own bike, the Jaén provincial capital has shops offering road rental with gearing suited to mountain routes like this one.

Tips

  • Book ahead: Orcera is over an hour from the capital, so pick up the bike the day before

Technical clothing for the Clásica Sierra de Segura

In late April, mornings in the Jaén mountains can be cool, especially on the descents after the climbs, with a chance of spring mountain showers.

Tips

  • Bring a light rain jacket: spring in the Sierra de Segura is prone to sudden weather changes

Nutrition for the Clásica Sierra de Segura

2,100 m of elevation gain in just 104 km means a demanding pace on the climbs; feed stations are spread along the route through the natural park.

Tips

  • Fuel up before each climb so you don't run empty on the toughest ramps

How to get to Orcera

Orcera lies deep in the Sierra de Segura, with no direct train connection; the closest airport is Granada-Jaén, over an hour and a half away by car.

Tips

  • Plan your timing carefully: the roads into the Sierra de Segura are mountain roads and the trip is slower than the distance suggests

Car rental in Jaén

Renting a car at Granada-Jaén or Albacete is the most practical way to reach Orcera with your bike, given the lack of direct public transport to the area.

Tips

  • A car with a bike rack is nearly essential to reach this rural inland area of Jaén

Sports insurance for the Clásica Sierra de Segura

Registration includes one-day insurance for non-federated riders; federated riders need to show a valid licence.

Tips

  • Check that your insurance covers mountain routes with technical descents

Body care for the Clásica Sierra de Segura

With 2,100 m of elevation gain packed into just over 100 km, fatigue in the quads and calves is especially noticeable in the final kilometers.

Tips

  • Stretch and use the foam roller in the hours after the race to speed up recovery

Components for the Clásica Sierra de Segura

2,100 m of elevation gain in just 104 km leaves little room to recover between climbs; riding with power meter pedals helps you pace the effort and avoid blowing up on the natural park's final ramps.

Tips

  • Set a wattage cap below your FTP for the early climbs: there's room to push on the final kilometers

Sunglasses for the Clásica Sierra de Segura

The open roads through the Cazorla, Segura y Las Villas Natural Park offer little shade on the high sections; sunglasses with good side coverage are welcome on the technical, windy descents.

Tips

  • Choose a clear or low-category lens for an early start, when the light in the mountains is still dim
